Narrow-lot house plans

Narrow-lot plans fight two problems at once: getting light into the middle of a long floor plate, and not spending half the frontage on a garage. The layouts here pull living to the rear where it can open to the yard, and use the length rather than resisting it.

Common questions

How narrow is a narrow lot?
In most Australian markets a block under about 10 m wide is treated as narrow lot, and under 7.5 m brings its own design rules in several councils. Side setbacks eat into that width before you draw a single wall.
How do you get light into the middle of a narrow plan?
Courtyards, highlight windows above the roof of a lower section, and skylights over circulation. The trap is relying on side windows: with a setback of a metre or so and a neighbour's wall opposite, they deliver far less light than the plan suggests.
